Motorcyclist dies in Interstate 78 crash

A motorcyclist died in a three-vehicle crash Sunday at 10 a.m. on Interstate 78 eastbound in Salisbury Township.

State police at the Fogelsville barracks said Gavin J. Long, 20, of Dauphin, died in the crash.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio said he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:15 a.m.

Police said he was operating a 2024 Yamaha when he attempted to change lanes but failed to ascertain the distance from the trailing unit of a 2022 Volvo, impacting the driver’s side rear of the trailer. Police said Long was thrown forward and came to rest underneath the trailer and was struck by the passenger’s side rear tires of a 2025 Cadillac Escalade.

Police said the Volvo then impacted the passenger’s side of the Cadillac before all of the vehicles came to rest.

State police and the coroner’s and district attorney’s offices are investigating the crash.
