Softball game to aid Franklin FD
It’s a chance for former players to reunite, all while raising funds toward a worthwhile cause.
The 10th annual Franklin Township Girls Old Timers Softball Game will be held at noon Saturday at Christman Ball Field in Franklin Township. The rain date is Sunday.
Along with the softball game, there will be a basket raffle, 50/50 drawing and homemade food.
Don Rehrig, even co-organizer, said the game is open to any girl 18 or older or coach who has previously played for the Franklin Township Softball Association.
Rehrig said they have about 18 or 19 girls coming out to play this year’s game.
“It’s become a reunion for a lot of the girls, reminiscing,” Rehrig said. “We have a bunch of new girls; they’re finding out about it (who are) coming out (to) give of themselves for the day; it’s time for them to give back.”
Rehrig said proceeds from this year’s game will benefit the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department.
“They’re ordering a new engine pumper, (so this will) help to offset some of those costs,” he said. “The support of the people coming out and doing the basket raffle, eating food that’s prepared, any support from the community would be greatly appreciated.”
Lynn Diehl, fire chief of the Franklin Township Fire Department, said any contributions are greatly appreciated.
“We’re trying to raise funds wherever we can; we have a new truck on order that’s going to cost $1.3 million, we’re trying to get whatever we can wherever we can,” Diehl said. “We’re just hoping to see a lot of the community come out; there’s a lot of people that played throughout the years, hopefully they’ll come out and support everything tomorrow.”
Rehrig said the game previously raised funds for the Mahoning Valley Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Franklin Township Fire Department and Lehighton Fire Department.
Over the last nine years, Rehrig said the game has raised just over $24,000 for area organizations.
In addition to fire companies, he said the game previously raised funds for the Butch Rodgers Scholarship fund, American Legion Post 314 of Lehighton, Vanessa Hand Family, and Franklin Township Athletic Association concession stand rebuild.
