Weatherly sets rates for fishing at Eurana Park

Weatherly residents could soon be casting a line in Eurana Park.

Borough council approved a resolution setting daily rates for fishing at the lake, which had been the borough’s swimming hole for decades.

The borough decided to cease using the lake for swimming due to decreased use by residents and increasing costs to run the swimming program with lifeguards, staff and chemicals.

The borough considered charging people a daily rate plus a per-pound cost for each fish caught, but decided instead to charge for each pole per person.

The fee will be $10 for one person fishing with one rod and the limit on fish will be two, and if a second rod is used by the same person, an additional $5 will be charged and two more fish will be allowed, Borough Manager Harold Pudliner said.

The rules state that participants, ages 13 and older, will register and receive a bucket and vest. All fish caught must be kept and not returned to the lake, and anglers must register the number of fish caught when they return.

People will be able to rent a fishing rod and reel with a bobber, hook and split-shots at a rate of $20 a day. Loss of the bobber, split shots or hook will be charged an $8 fee to replace. Not returning a vest will cost $5 and a bucket, $10.

Pudliner said they’ll need to hire two to three people to work at the lake, and they’re hoping to run the program three days a week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for eight hours a day, possibly 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The program could be up and running by mid-August, he said.

Councilman Michael Bellizia said that he would like regular updates on the program so that they could make changes as needed to best accommodate those participating.

He also wanted to know any profit and loss numbers, especially since the borough will be hiring people to manage the program.

Pudliner and council members don’t know how successful the fishing program will be, or if people will be interested, but wanted to move forward on trial basis this summer.
