Weatherly police chief to retire

Weatherly’s police chief has retired after more than 30 years of service to the borough as officer and chief.

Chief Brian Markovchick submitted a letter announcing his retirement to borough council Monday.

“The decision comes after months of deliberate thought and consultation with family, friends and colleagues,” he wrote.

Markovchick began his career in Weatherly as a part-time officer in 1994. He was named officer-in-charge in January 2009 and police chief later that same year.

He credited the borough’s support as moving the department forward.

“The borough’s support has moved this police department to be respected, professional and full-service police department,” Markovchick wrote.

The department implemented standard operating guidelines and added a school resource officer, he said.

Other improvements and technology include a borough-wide camera system, updated digital radios, body cameras, crime/command vehicle, an updated report management system and training for officers, he wrote.

“The real value of the police department rests with the men and women who sacrifice and give so much each and every day to the borough of Weatherly,” Markovchick wrote.

“There is no doubt that the officers of this department will continue to attempt to move the department forward,” he wrote.

Councilman Joe Cyburt said that Markovchick did a nice job and the borough’s police department is something to be proud of.

Council accepted his retirement letter, even though there was some hesitation on who would make the motion ending a three-decade career in law enforcement in the borough.

Councilman Jeffery Miller made the motion, seconded by Councilwoman Theresa D’Andrea. The vote to accept the letter of retirement was unanimous.

Markovchick’s last day was Friday.
