Tamaqua orders new Christmas decorations

Tamaqua will be decked in new Christmas decorations when the holidays roll around this year.

On Tuesday, borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt noted that the decor has been ordered.

“They should be arriving sometime this month,” Steigerwalt said.

The borough received a $75,000 grant from the J.E. Morgan Foundation for the new holiday trim, which will be owned by the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce. The foundation carries on the philanthropy of Morgan, inventor of the waffle stitch and founder of the former J.E. Morgan Knitting Mills.

Aimee Dotson, Chamber president, noted that the donation was very generous — and appreciated.

The new decorations are wreaths, a bit similar to what has donned the poles in recent years.

“We’ve always loved the charm of the wreaths, but over time they’ve faded, many have lost their lights, and a few have been damaged by the elements,” Dotson said.

The new decorations feature three candles inside each wreath. They’re tied with bright red bows.

“These will be more visible and decorative both during the day and at night,” Dotson said. “Plus, the new ones are fully LED, making them more energy efficient and budget friendly.”

During the council meeting, President Brian Connely asked what would be done with the old Christmas decorations.

“The point is, because we’re going to slowly start running out of room very soon for Christmas decorations and we don’t want to have all that stuff sitting here,” Connely said.

Steigerwalt noted that the Chamber owns them, and asked the borough to advertise them for sale on Municibid, an online auction for local governments and school districts.

The new shipment will include more than 100 Christmas decorations, Steigerwalt said.

“And they’re pretty big,” he added.

In other business, council:

• Approved a handicapped parking space for 214 Bowe St.

• Eliminated a parking space on the north side of Cedar Street to provide access to a new parking lot for the Tamaqua Hi-Rise.

• Approved a $305,000 lease agreement for a large dump truck with Mauch Chunk Trust Company. The lease is for 10 years with a 5.25% interest rate.
