Family raises funds in son’s memory
In 2006, the Formica family lost a dear member of their family.
David Formica, 15, had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2002 and lost his battle in 2006.
Losing a member of one’s family is very difficult. The Formica family chose to honor David’s memory by raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. To that end, a basket auction was held Saturday at the Lehighton Recreation Center on South 8th Street, with all the proceeds going to the society.
“So far, since we started in 2003, we have raised over $400,000 for the society,” said David’s Mom, Pam Formica.
“It’s very satisfying that we know that the money is being used for people who really need it,” Pam said. “While we don’t actually get to meet the people, we know they are getting the help they need as a result of our work.”
The basket auction on Saturday brought in an additional $4,303. There were more than 220 baskets and gift cards in the auction. People had a chance to bid on items like bottles of wine, snack baskets, blankets, purses, personal care items, and more.
A large item table included a set of barbecue utensils, a Hampton Bay ceiling fan, a large hand-painted wooden American flag, just to name a few.
Since 1949, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested nearly $1.8 billion in research for the disease. They continue to search for cures and provide lifesaving treatments for patients. They also provide hope, compassion, education, and support.
The David F. Formica Memorial Fundraising continues to host several different events throughout the course of a year to raise money for the society. Visit their Facebook page to get more information: www.facebook.com/DavidFormicaPokerRun
