Pa. senator wants to introduce legislation for vehicle change

A Pennsylvania state senator plans to introduce legislation that would require vehicles to display a front license plate.

Sen. Katie Muth, D-Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties, posted a memo last week saying she’ll introduce the bill in the near future and that it would “require all vehicles registered in the Commonwealth to display a license plate on both the front and rear of their vehicle.”

“Far too often there are hit-and-run accidents, traffic incidents, or crimes committed where only the front of a vehicle is captured by cameras or witnesses,” Muth wrote in the memo. “Requiring a license plate on the front of a car will improve vehicle identification and enhance public safety by helping law enforcement officers, witnesses, or cameras more easily and quickly identify a vehicle.”

There are currently 29 other states that require a license plate on both the front and rear of all vehicles, including neighboring New York, New Jersey and Maryland.

There is also bipartisan legislation pending in Florida that would require a front and rear registration plate.

Muth said that her proposal would help catch drivers in hit-and-run crashes, solve crimes and improve toll collection systems.
