Nesquehoning faces delay with park renovations
Nesquehoning Borough Council officials say that there is no completion date yet on a park in town that has been closed for renovations for nearly 10 months.
On Wednesday, borough council President David Hawk and borough secretary/treasurer Deborah DelFranco said that delays in finishing the Johnson & Jacobs Memorial Park on West Railroad Street come down to the contractor and subcontractor.
DelFranco said that she had called the contractor, who is waiting on a subcontractor to install fencing, but had not been successful on getting any further dates as to when work would resume.
“We’re kind of at their mercy right now,” Hawk said.
Council has not taken any formal action regarding fines for the delay in work, however Hawk said, council will be looking at the terms of the contract to see if there was any penalties built into the contract for work not being completed in the time frame that was outlined.
The contract terms originally stated that the park renovations would be completed by Oct. 14, 2024, however, unforeseen issues delayed some of the work until December.
The park has been closed since September 2024 when council closed off the area so LB/DB Construction could complete the renovations at a cost of $162,854.
Council received grant funding for the project, including a $25,000 grant for playground equipment.
In December, council expressed frustrations over the delays, mainly because they weren’t quite sure why the delays, which included constructing a block retaining wall, were happening. The wall was completed in January.
