Caregiver charged with theft

A Lansford man faces identity theft and related charges after using the credit card of the woman he was caring for to pay his insurance.

Zachary Shetrompf, 37, of East Kline Street, was arraigned last week on charges of identity theft, access device issued to another, and financial exploitation of older adult, and released on $20,000 unsecured bail.

According to arrest papers, a woman and her current caregiver came to the Nesquehoning police station in April to report that Shetrompf had been stealing from her and provided a bank statement with fraudulent charges.

Police noted charges from Progressive Insurance on multiple dates on the statement form Mauch Chunk Trust Bank. Officers served a warrant on the insurance company, and obtained Shetrompf’s insurance policy and a letter of rescission notice.

Police also obtained an audio file with Shetrompf confirming the card listed on file to pay his insurance policy ends in the same last four numbers as the victim’s bank’s card, court papers aid.

When interviewed by police, Shetrompf admitted to making all of the purchases in question, except for four, court papers said. The charges made to the woman’s credit card totaled $2,659.27.
