Police: Woman took $500K from employer Court documents say she bought a pool, $4,000 puppy, cruise
Court papers show evidence in the case against an Effort woman who is accused of stealing more than half a million dollars from her employer.
The monthslong scheme involved fake invoices, unauthorized credit card use and forged signatures.
Sabrina Roman, 46, who worked as the bookkeeper at Prosser Labs in Chestnuthill Township, allegedly used company credit cards to make personal purchases — including gift cards, a cruise, a pool and a $4,000 puppy for her autistic son.
State police said the scheme unraveled after a Staples receipt for nearly $2,000 in gift cards was found in the company restroom.
The charges appeared on an American Express card used in New Jersey — far from any business location.
An internal audit revealed Roman had opened a second American Express account using the owner’s personal information, including his Social Security number and date of birth.
Investigators say she had sole control of all financial passwords and account access. Police found a digital signature pad in Roman’s desk, which the business owner had explicitly forbidden her from using.
Roman admitted to ordering it and claimed other employees also used it. State police say Roman began making unauthorized purchases in August 2023 and continued through June.
She told investigators it started with a small accidental charge, but when no one noticed, she kept going — buying gifts for friends, paying her bills and supporting her family during a difficult time.
“I didn’t realize it added up to so much,” Roman said during a police interview, according to the affidavit.
She called the fraud a secret she kept even from close friends and family.
Roman returned company property including a computer and printer, which were entered into evidence.
She faces multiple felony charges, including theft, identity theft and receiving stolen property.
Roman was released on $25,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 3 before District Judge Daniel Kresge in Bartonsville.
