Locust Lake remains closed to camping

Camping remains closed at Locust Lake State Park in Barnesville.

But sites could open as early as mid-September, according to a spokesman from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Resources, which oversees the commonwealth’s 124 parks.

Wesley Robinson said that while there is no set date, plans are to reopen the park this year. He estimated that camping might open after the Labor Day holiday.

Robinson blamed infrastructure issues for the unavailability of campsites.

Furthermore, work to build two modern shower houses, a number of full-service campsites and paving is ongoing.

“No firm completion date can be determined yet, construction projects often face delays due to weather, supply chain issues, and other circumstances. Once a final completion date is determined, the impacted campsites will become available for reservations in the later 2025 season,” according to the park’s website.

Construction projects at the park began in late 2023. A portion of the park, including its tent-only campsites and its modern, non-electric sites, was open to camping in 2024.

Those who attempt to make reservations online will discover that the earliest they can book is in 2026.

Even though camping remains closed, the park is open for walking, biking and swimming.
