Lehigh Twp. resident pushes for preservation

The Lehigh Township supervisors discussed land preservation at their meeting on Tuesday.

Resident Zach Szoke attended the meeting to talk to the supervisors about putting information on land preservation into the township’s September newsletter. He gave the supervisors a copy to review.

Supervisor Cindy Miller said, “I want there to be cons in the newsletter, also not just pros. The residents need the facts.”

The board agreed and decided to make a list of their own to add more facts.

Township manager Alice Rehrig said, “How about a week to have your list ready? We need to have it in soon to be published.” The board agreed.

Residents then started to question the board about why land preservation can’t just be put the on the ballot in November.

Szoke said, “I’ve been coming to meetings since February about this. You keep putting it off instead of just making a decision.” Residents agreed.

Mike Jones, the president of the supervisors, asked the solicitor David Backenstoe, “Do you think you can write up a petition and advertise for November.”

Backenstoe replied, “You need to have it in 13 Tuesdays before the election. That would make it Aug. 5.”

“Can you look into it?” Jones asked.

Backenstoe said, “I can try. I wish there was more time.”

In other business, the supervisors heard the following:

• The Public Works position and zoning officer position will be posted until July 3;

• Resident Kermit Geary Jr. said there is speeding by his home and trespassing on his land. He would like the police to do more. His house is located near where routes 145 and 248 in Walnutport.
