June 25, 1980 — Frank McCarroll pitches a four-hitter and also contributes an RBI single as Tamaqua’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth team defeats Freeland 7-2 to advance to the District VIII championship round. A pair of sacrifice flies off the bats of Ed Titus and Wendel Paisley give Tamaqua a 2-0 first-inning lead. The winners widen the margin in the second with two more runs, one on an RBI single by Charlie Herbinko and the other on a Titus run-scoring double. McCarroll drives home a run in the seventh with a hit, clinching the victory. Tamaqua also received a hit and a run from Dave Gensure.
