You wanted summer? It’s here ... Extreme heat watch Sunday through Wednesday

The summer of 2025 is just a day old, and already, forecasters are warning of dangerously high heat in the coming days.

“The heat will be Sunday through Wednesday,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Chad Merrill.

High temperatures on those days will be between 95 and 96 degrees in the Lehighton area, he said.

But Merrill said it will feel much, much warmer.

“The real feel temperature when you combine the sunshine with the humidity will be 101 to 105 degrees,” he noted.

The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat watch from Sunday morning through Wednesday evening, and predicted “dangerously hot conditions” in portions of the Times News coverage area.

“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during heat and high humidity events,” according to the National Weather Service.

The highest heat index values will be on Monday and Tuesday.

It will even be hot out of the sun.

“It will be in the low to mid-90s in the shade,” Merrill said.

Nighttime temperatures Sunday to Wednesday will range from 70 to 75 degrees.

“In addition to the daytime heat, overnight low temperatures will also be very warm and oppressively muggy,” the National Weather Service said.

According to Merrill, extreme heat watches are issued when the expected heat index is 105 degrees for two or more consecutive hours.

“The watch is usually issued ahead of a heat wave, and when we get closer, it will either be changed to a heat advisory or an extreme heat warning,” he said.

Merrill said that Thursday will see a slight cool down with a high close to 85 degrees.

“There will be a little more cloud cover and a threat for a few thunderstorms,” he said.

As for today, the high temperature will be around 87 degrees with mostly sunny skies.

“It’s not a bad day,” he said.
