The new school year is still two months away, but the Panther Valley School District is already getting its buildings ready, its superintendent said in his report to school directors.
Superintendent Dave McAndrew on Wednesday said the district received a $1 million grant this past year, and new windows, roofs and hot water updates are underway in the intermediate school.
Work will begin on the intermediate school roof when the rain subsides, Scott Fisher, maintenance supervisor, said, but repairs to the high school roof have been completed.
Some of the windows have already been replaced in the intermediate school, and the hot water heaters are in.
Fisher’s maintenance team is also working on painting classrooms, high school bleacher repairs are done and hallways in the elementary school are being painted, he said.
McAndrew said all the walls at the elementary school will be painted, and ceiling tiles will be replaced, as they work to update the district’s buildings.
Also, focused on next year, McAndrew plans on speaking at the state Capitol on Monday regarding fair funding, as the state budget seems to be in flux.
The district’s summer feeding program is also underway, with school lunches available at four pickup locations in the Panther Valley on Tuesdays and Thursdays, he said.
Cafeteria staff prepared 625 lunches for children on Tuesday, McAndrew said.
“We’re really trying to make sure our kids are eating over the summer,” he said.
