Weissport works on street drain
The flooding problem at the corner of Bridge Street and White Street in Weissport continues to plague residents of the borough.
The Public Works Department has been working to pump out a blocked drain, which means part of White Street has to be blocked off while the pump is working.
Weissport Borough Council Vice President Bill Hartzell advised council on Monday night that he is working with the borough of Palmerton to use its camera and water jet system.
Weissport will be setting up a municipality agreement with Palmerton to be able to borrow the equipment.
Repairs to the clogged drain system may prove costly.
“I’ve been in contact with Tim at (state Rep.) Doyle Heffley’s office,” Harzell said, “because, if it is what we have been told it is that’s causing the problem, it will be beyond what we can handle, and we’re looking at state or federal funding to help pay for it.”
Mayor Paulette Watson inquired why Weissport Borough is looking at getting funding if the problem is with a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation road.
The drain is on Bridge Street, a state road.
“PennDOT only take care of the grate,” Secretary Cheryl Miller, who formerly worked for PennDOT, said, “not the drain.”
“Back in the ’90s, they passed a law; they take care of the drain box, and that’s it,” Hartzell added. “The piping and everything underneath has to be taken care of by the local municipality.”
