A mulch fire that broke out in Lehigh Township nearly three months ago continues to burn.
Lehigh Township Fire Commissioner Rich Hildebrand noted at Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting that the fire on Cherryville Road has been burning for over 11 weeks.
Hildebrand added that they’ve put over a million gallons of water on it.
He said the fire is still underground, and that it remains in the same spot (on the hillside)
Contacted Thursday morning, Hildebrand said the fire is of no imminent threat, and added it’s checked on daily by the local fire department.
“It’s subterranean, it’s underground, it would need to be excavated and due to its location, that is not easily accomplished,” Hildebrand said. “It would need to run out of fuel.”
The mulch fire broke out March 22 in the 300 block of Cherryville Road.
The Lehigh Township Fire Company was dispatched to the mulch fire just before 7 a.m., which Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company Second Assistant Chief Brian Krische said at that time was a maze of mulch, wood chips, tree logs and debris.
The area is on a 60-degree slope, which made it difficult to access.
There were 10 fire companies called for assistance.
