Matthew J. Knauss and Paul J. Yurick, who left their high school classes in 1943 to serve in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, respectively, were awarded their high school diplomas 59 years later during the 2002 commencement exercises of Jim Thorpe Area High School.
Knauss and Yurick marched side-by-side with members of the Class of 2002 and later received their diplomas from Charles J. McHugh Jr., director of Veterans Affairs and a member of the local school board.
Knauss left Mauch Chunk High School on March 9 of his graduating year to enlist in the service.
Across town, three days later, Yurick enlisted in the Marine Corps.
