Washington Twp. takes loan for emergency radios

Washington Township needs 81 radios for the new P25 radio network for EMS, Emerald Fire Company, Slatedale Fire Company and Friedens Fire Company.

The supervisors said Lehigh County has given them a loan for $384,736.48 to purchase them.

The supervisors had two choices for the pay back — A five-year loan at 0%, with a payment of $76,947.30 a year, or a 10-year loan at 5%, with a payment of $49,825.13 a year.

The supervisors approved the five-year loan.

The supervisors approved a contract for $26,413.75 to Asphalt Maintenance Solutions to tar and chip with sealer for the Eagle Nest Park parking lot.

Emergency Management Coordinator Joe Mead said, “Atlantic hurricane season has started. While we don’t see direct impacts from hurricanes, there can be significant potential for flooding rains and power outages. Take time to check and service generators, clean cutters and drainage, as well as stock up on batteries, flashlights and other preparedness essentials.”

Mead reported the notification and resource manual is due for updating. The manual consists of names and contact information for those who would need to be contacted in the event of a large-scale event, but also a list of specialty service providers and people who may require extra assistance.

“My goal is to get the update completed by the end of July,” he said.

Friedens Fire Chief Joel Merkel informed the supervisors, “We have a fire hydrant on Swamp Hollow Road that is almost dry. After looking at it, the pipe was not put in deep enough leading to the pond that the water comes from. It was put in over 20 years ago.

He said Rex Equipment will replace it for no cost.

The supervisors agreed, but township Solicitor John Ashley said, “I would like a letter that would detail what will be done.” Manager Wade Marlatt said he would work with Merkel to acquire an agreement.

The supervisors approved an agriculture security designation for 8.81 acres approved by Earl and Kelly Zellner at 8367 Furnace Road, Slatington.

The board released the budgeted $1,000 donation to Friedens Athletic Association for 2025.
