Tree trimming could delay traffic in Lehighton

Tree trimming work along a busy intersection in Lehighton could eventually lead to some traffic holdups and possibly single lane traffic for several weeks.

Borough L & P Superintendent Barry Fisher informed borough council at Monday’s meeting of his intention to do tree trimming between Bridge Street and Route 443 on the mountainside.

Fisher said the issue is that trees are growing into the three phase power that’s feeding the south circuit of the 443 business district, and that was causing some outages because the trees were interfering with the circuit.

He told council he would need Flagger Force for traffic control, as well as to obtain a highway occupancy permit from PennDOT in order for the work to get done.

Vanessa Nedrick, an engineer with Remington and Vernick Engineers, cautioned Fisher that it would take time to obtain the highway occupancy permit from PennDOT and that will require 30 days notice.

Fisher said the goal is to keep traffic moving in two directions, though it may come down to single lane traffic.

“It is going to create a lot of traffic issues in that area,” Fisher said.

Fisher said he anticipates the tree trimming will start in August and be completed by the end of that month.

He estimated the work would likely take between two to three weeks to complete.

Fisher said there will eventually be signs posted stating they will be working.
