Sheriff presents $49K check to county

The Carbon County sheriff again gave the county a check for thousands of dollars in funds returned to Carbon that otherwise may have sat unused.

On Thursday, Sheriff Daniel Zeigler presented the commissioners with a check for $49,097.60 from reimbursements for trainings. The check initially was anticipated to be just over $8,000.

“When a member of the sheriff’s office goes through training, there is a reimbursement that can be given back,” Zeigler said. “It does take some time. This year, after reviewing the budget, it was anticipated that the sheriff’s office was going to receive $8,175 back from those trainings … but essentially because of our efforts in the sheriff’s office, submitting timely invoices and following through with PCCD (Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency) we didn’t receive $8,175, we received $49,097.60.”

He pointed out that while that is extra funds, the sheriff’s office may need money to pay for extradition costs, so it would come in handy for that, or for other department operations.

Zeigler added that the money turned over Thursday now adds to the funds his office has given the county in the last six month.

Earlier this year, he presented a check for $51,000 that was recouped through the state treasurer’s office. That money is the result of unclaimed property that his office had through the state.

“That brings the unanticipated revenue from the sheriff’s office this year to $92,090.30 that we’re giving back to the county,” he said.
