W. Penn seeks parks commission volunteers

West Penn Township supervisors have issued another plea for volunteers to serve on township park commissions.

The board asked for interested folks at May’s meeting; however, no one has stepped forward.

“We’re still looking for people to help on the park commission,” board Chairman Tony Prudenti said at Monday’s supervisors’ meeting. “If anyone has time or anything, that would be great if they helped us out.”

Supervisor Jim Akins agreed.

“We’re in desperate need,” he said, especially since plans for a new park — Atlas Park — are underway.

Akins noted that Zion Stone Park is managed by members of Zion Stone Church.

“The church has been doing it for a very long time,” he said. “And some of them (members) have been doing it for a very long time, 40 years or so.”

Akins said it would be nice to find some “young blood.”

“Usually when you do that, you bring in newer programs, it adds life to the parks, to the recreation that happens in those parks,” he said.

He encouraged attendees to consider stepping up, or mentioning it to others.

“If you know anybody who might be interested, you know, some young couples moving to the township whose kids are starting to get involved,” Akins said.

The position doesn’t require much time, he noted.

“It helps the parks maintain the maintenance, maintain their needs,” Akins said. “It gives us vision on what to develop for the park, what kind of swing sets get used, etc.,” he said. “So if you know of anyone interested, we are always looking.”

Those interested should contact the township.
