Nesquehoning reminds residents not to put out trash too early
Nesquehoning Borough Council reminds residents that trash is not to be placed on curbs more than 24 hours before trash pickup days.
Last week, Councilwoman Suzanne Smith reminded residents after there had been some issues with people putting trash out on curbs days before pickups.
“I know we’ve been running into some problems with things going on and sitting on the streets a little earlier than it should be,” she said. “With the warmer weather, the animals are coming out. We just want to remind people to be respectful of the ordinances we have.”
She noted that the borough now has two large item pickups a month — the first and third weeks — to help residents get rid of larger items.
Smith also reminded people that it is grass cutting season and they should keep grass trimmed to avoid borough fines.
In other matters, council discussed or acted on the following items:
• Solicitor Robert Yurchak announced that things are moving forward with the Lehigh Carbon Community College parcel that has been offered to the borough. The 40-acre parcel is located off Route 54 next to Tonoli Road.
Yurchak said that LCCC needs to have the donation to the borough go before the board in June.
• Approved the purchase of a new police vehicle in the amount of $61,561.86.
• John McArdle, Nesquehoning Hose Company fire chief, asked for permission to inspect the dry hydrant at the pond at the Nesquehoning Conservation Club park in the Hauto Valley Estates.
• McArdle also noted that the fire company was not selected for a Local Share Account grant during this round. The borough applied for funds to help purchase new radios for first responders to aid in the changeover from analog to digital frequency.
• Approved rehiring Cody Orsulak as summer help.
• Approved a time extension to M&J Excavation from May 1 to June 6 for the 2024 road project due to recent weather that caused delays.
• Approved obtaining two new CDs for a portion of sewer funds. The interest rate for the CDs is 3.65%.
• Ratified the hiring of Steven Kuntzleman as a crossing guard.
• Councilwoman Lois Kuba thanked borough employees and departments for staying within their budgets for the first quarter of the year. This helped since money was not coming in until recently with the taxes.
