As part of an ongoing mission to strengthen roadway safety across the commonwealth, the Pennsylvania State Police released the results of its Memorial Day Weekend enforcement detail.

During the four days between May 23-26, police investigated 756 crashes that resulted in 140 injuries and five fatalities. Intoxicated driving was a factor in 57 of those crashes, two of which were fatal.

Troopers arrested 519 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and they issued 27,139 citations, including 7,033 for speeding, 977 for failing to wear a seat belt and 166 for not securing children in safety seats.

The Memorial Day Weekend crash statistics are as follows (2024 totals in parentheses): total crashes 756 (849); fatal crashes 4 (5); persons killed 5 (6); persons injured 140 (164); DUI-related crashes 57 (40); and DUI-related fatal crashes 2 (2).

The enforcement statistics for the same period (2024 totals in parentheses) included: DUI arrests 519 (456); speeding citations 7,033 (9,006); child seat citations 166 (162); seat belt citations 977 (1,167); and other citations 18,963 (17,148).

In other related reports, officials reported a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Northampton County by state police from the Belfast, Bethlehem and Fogelsville barracks over the holiday weekend period resulted in four DUI arrests, four traffic citations being issued and eight written warnings being issued to drivers.

State police at the Stroudsburg barracks reported an initiative conducted in Monroe County resulted in police making 203 contacts that resulted in four DUI arrests, 10 traffic citations and 23 warnings being issued.

State police at the Lehighton barracks reported on the results of the safety initiative they conducted over the holiday weekend on Carbon and Monroe roads as follows: four arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance; 18 traffic citations issued; and 15 written warnings issued for violations of the Motor Vehicle Code.
