State police to conduct safety checks

Pennsylvania State Police officials throughout the region are cautioning the motoring public of safety initiatives that will take effect throughout the Memorial Day enforcement period and in June.

In press releases, police at the Bethlehem, Stroudsburg, Schuylkill Haven, Hazleton and Lehighton barracks announced DUI checkpoints will be in effect on various roads in Carbon, Schuylkill, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe and Northampton counties.

The Memorial Day enforcement period began at 12:01 a.m. Friday and will conclude at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

During that period, sobriety checkpoint will be held at selective roads. A traffic safety initiative is where troopers systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observed drivers for articulable facts and/or behaviors normally associated with alcohol or drug impairment.

The goal is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug related fatal and serious crashes, and to reduce the number of DUI drivers on Pennsylvania highways.

State police officials said the state police is committed to maintaining a safe environment for the motoring public.

Police from the Lehighton, Hazleton and Stroudsburg barracks announced the checkpoints will take place this weekend. Police in Schuylkill Haven announced troopers will conduct checkpoints on Schuylkill County roads from June 6 to 22.

Troop M, Bethlehem, have previously announced the initiative Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program will target aggressive drivers, speeding, seat belt violations and child seat infractions.

Troopers will be concentrating their efforts on distracting drivers who violate statutes regarding texting while driving, handheld mobile telephone, prohibiting use of hearing impairment devices, prohibiting text-based communications, careless driving and reckless driving.

In addition, Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Drivers and Drug Recognition Expert troopers will specifically focus on apprehending motorists who operate their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.
