Lehighton UVO plans grave visits, Memorial Day services
The Lehighton United Veterans Organization has announced the schedule for Memorial Day services.
The main service is at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater.
Commander Kevin Long said the speaker will be retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Pamela McGaha.
“She was my supervisor when we deployed to support NATO operations during Operation Joint Endeavor/Joint Guard as part of the Stabilization Force in 1997,” Long said. “We were the Terrain Management Team and responsible for all things on the ground at Taszar Air Field in Southern Hungary.”
Long noted that McGaha was a captain, while he was a sergeant first class, and that they were in the 213th ASG PA Army National Guard when they were deployed to Hungary.
McGaha recently concluded her 37-year military career while serving as the commanding general, NATO Headquarters, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
She also served as the commanding general of the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in Orlando, Florida, the largest in the U.S. Army, with more than 8,300 soldiers and civilians, and 90 units across 10 states.
McGaha graduated from Bucknell University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and was commissioned in the Ordnance Corps. A specialist in logistics, she has held commands in the maintenance, petroleum, and sustainment fields, as well as primary staff assignments in Operations and Training, Human Resources and Logistics Support.
She has also worked with the Australian Army Reserves on domestic emergency preparedness; as a Pennsylvania Human Relations commissioner enforcing state discrimination laws; and for two U.S. senators as a member of their Military Academy Selection Boards.
During her career, McGaha deployed in several overseas missions, including Operation Desert Shield/Storm; Operation Join Endeavor/Guard in Hungary; and the Western Balkans, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
McGaha is a Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of the United States Army War College, with a master’s degree in strategic studies. She also holds an Master of Business Administration from Lehigh University.
Her military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NATO Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. She is a Distinguished Member of the 213th Regimental Association and a resident of Bethlehem.

• 11 a.m.: Military service at Dinkey Memorial Church Cemetery with wreath laying at cross. Student speaker will be Bella Moyer.
• 11:45 a.m.: En route to Packerton, Military Honors at West Bowmans Veterans Monument.
• 12:15 p.m.: Service at Packerton Cemetery, Mahoning Township. Student speaker will be Claudia Pagotto.
• 1 p.m.: Packerton Veterans Memorial at Zion Lutheran Church, Packerton, Military Honors Lehighton UVO.

• 9 a.m.: Military Honors at Lehighton UVO at Parryville Cemetery.
• 9:15 a.m.: Military Honors at Bunker Hill/Jewish Cemetery, East Weissport.
• 9:30 a.m.: Service at Long Run Cemetery, Franklin Township. Student speaker will be Taylor Moyer.
• 10:30 a.m.: St. Paul’s Church Cemetery (Big Creek), Franklin Township. Student speaker will be Brea Demage.
• 11:30 a.m.: Franklin Heights Memorial Park, East Weissport.
• 11:45 a.m.: Services at St. Matthew’s Church, North Weissport. Student speaker will be Adam Danner.

Veterans groups will be divided into two sections with services/honors being held in Weissport and Lehighton simultaneously.
Group A
• 8:45 a.m.: Military Honors at WWII Memorial at Lehighton Veterans Park (bypass).
• 8:55: a.m.: Military Honors at Col. Jacob Weiss Monument (lower park).
• 9:15 a.m.: Military Honors at St. Luke’s Gnaden Huetten Campus WWII Veterans Monument.
• 9:30 a.m.: Military Honors at SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church Cemetery.
• 9:45 a.m.: Military Honors at Vietnam Veterans Monument/PFC Clyde Houser Monument at Lehighton Borough Annex Building.
• 10 a.m.: Military Honors at Firemen’s Monument at Lehighton (upper park).
Group B
• 9 a.m.: Benjamin Franklin Monument and WWI Veterans Monument in Weissport Park.
• 9:15 a.m.: Union Hill Cemetery, speaker will be Ronald Rabenold.
• 10 a.m.: Wreath toss from Weissport Bridge.
Group A & B
• 10:30 a.m.: Main service at Lehighton Upper Park Amphitheater. Opening remarks will be from Lehighton Mayor Ryan Saunders. Speaker will be retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Pamela McGaha.
• 11:30 a.m.: Procession to Lehighton Cemetery. Military honors with flag raising.
• 12:15 p.m.: Military Honors at American Legion Post #314, followed by flag raising and conclusion of services/honors.
