State police announce holiday enforcement safety initiative

State police at Troop M, Bethlehem, has announced plans to conduct its holiday safety initiatives during the Memorial Day holiday period.

It will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday and conclude at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

The initiative Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program) will target aggressive drivers, speeding, seat belt violations and child seat infractions.

Troopers will be concentrating their efforts on distracting drivers who violate statutes regarding texting while driving, handheld mobile telephone, prohibiting use of hearing impairment devices, prohibiting text-based communications, careless driving and reckless driving.

In addition, Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Drivers and Drug Recognition Expert troopers will specifically focus on apprehending motorists who operate their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

Police said crash data for 2024 shows there were 45 crashes during the Memorial Day enforcement period a year ago, resulting in 16 people being injured. Two of those crashes were alcohol-related, police said.

Enforcement data for the same period in 2024 shows police made 29 DUI arrests and issued 158 speeding, 10 child passenger seat, 48 seat belt citations. They issued 50 occupant protection warnings (adults and children) and 984 other citations and made seven arrests that police said were self-initiated.
