Carbon trio, state judge candidates advance
There were no Carbon County government elections with challenges in Tuesday’s primary election, as three Republican row officeholders who are seeking reelection were without opposition.
They are virtually assured reelection to four-year terms, unless someone mounts a successful write-in candidacy in the fall, as there were no Democratic candidates for the offices on that side of the ballot.
Complimentary votes were the order of the day for incumbents Kevin Zelienka of Palmerton, treasurer; Tyra L. Boni of Franklin Township, clerk of courts; and Jean A. Papay of Lower Towamensing Township, register of wills and clerk of the orphans’ court.
Zelienka received 3,568 votes; Boni, 3,758; and Papay, 3,801.
State judgeships
Meanwhile, Carbon voters participated in balloting for candidates seeking nominations for seats on the state Superior and Commonwealth courts.
In the race for the GOP nomination for a seat on the Superior Court, county voters favored Maria Battista of Clarion County over Ann Marie Wheatcraft of Chester County. Battista received 2,287 votes here, while Wheatcraft received 1,460 votes. The nomination statewide was won by Battista, with 352,908 votes. Wheatcraft tallied 299,594.
Battista will face Democrat Brandon Neuman of Washington County in November. He received 2,739 votes in Carbon and 813,925 across the state.
In a race for one seat on the Commonwealth Court, Matt Wolford of Erie County won the statewide vote in Republican balloting, defeating Josh Prince of Berks County by a margin of 402,084 to 246,679. In Carbon, Prince tallied 1,943, while Wolford had 1,731.
Wolford will face Democrat Stella Tasi of Philadelphia County in the general election. She was unopposed and collected 2,696 votes in Carbon and 811,460 statewide.
