Coaldale seeks more local codes enforcer

Coaldale Borough Council is looking for someone else to provide code enforcement services.

“There is the potential that we are going to hire an outside source to do our code enforcement outside of Systems Design (Engineering),” Councilwoman Kim Gavornik said during Tuesday’s council meeting.

Systems Design Engineering was appointed to the code enforcement duty in November 2023.

Council President Claire Remington said council has been discussing its options.

“We are working diligently on that. We are not able to enforce our quality of life (ordinance) the way it needs to be done,” Council President Claire Remington said.

Systems Design Engineering is based in Leesport, Berks County.

“We need somebody closer to home,” Remington said.

In other business, council will:

• Discuss whether to revamp its employee handbook to include medical marijuana. Remington said those who are using the substance might be a liability if they’re using borough vehicles or equipment. Council will revisit the issued in June.

• Begin interviewing candidates for borough secretary.

• Place additional signs in borough parks to remind people to clean up after their dogs.
