Chuma a candidate for Lansford council

William Chuma, a former member of Lansford Borough Council and longtime public works employee, has announced his candidacy for a seat on the borough council.

He is running for a spot on the Republican ticket.

Chuma previously served on council from 2018 to 2022, during which time he chaired the borough’s street department.

He said he is running to bring his hands-on experience and practical approach back to borough government.

“During my time in office, we paved 32 streets, replaced more than two dozen sewers, installed new sewer lines, crack-sealed streets and trimmed dozens of trees across the borough,” Chuma said. “Snowplowing was always a top priority. Our downtown and especially the alleys were always cleared before 8 a.m.”

A 20-year veteran of the borough’s street department, Chuma emphasized his deep knowledge of Lansford’s infrastructure and his belief in cost-effective in-house work.

“With rising costs, we need to do more work in-house rather than rely on outside contractors,” he said. “Our street department is one of the best equipped in the Panther Valley and capable of much more than is currently being done.”

If elected, Chuma said he would push for the implementation of a preventive maintenance schedule to address recurring issues before they escalate.

He also pointed to his strong relationships with neighboring municipalities and his experience in shared services initiatives that helped complete large regional projects efficiently.

“With my previous work experience and time in office, I believe I’m the best candidate for the open position on council,” Chuma said. “I’m ready to get back to work for the people of Lansford.”
