Schuylkill animal shelter seeks funding

A Schuylkill County no-kill animal shelter is in danger of closing its doors due to what it called an “unprecedented financial crisis.”

In a letter to supporters, the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA noted that it does not receive government funding and relies on donations to survive.

“It is because of your generosity and compassion that we have been able to continue our work for over two decades, and make a difference in the lives of so many animals in need,” the letter notes.

But recent increases in costs for supplies, medical treatment, and maintenance — along with a significant decrease in donations — may spell the end of the Pine Grove shelter.

“Without immediate financial support, we will no longer be able to provide the essential care and services that our animals depend on,” the nonprofit notes. “As a no kill animal shelter, we receive zero government funding and rely solely on the generosity of our community and the dedication of our volunteers and supporters.”

The shelter rescues, treats, cares for and finds animals forever homes.

“Each animal that comes through our doors has a unique story, and it is our mission to ensure that their stories have happy endings,” the letter says. “The thought of having to turn away animals in need because we lack the resources to care for them is heartbreaking.”

The shelter is asking for donations of any amount to reach its $200,000 goal.

“Your kindness and generosity have always been the backbone of our shelter, and we are confident that, with your help, we can overcome this crisis and continue our vital work,” the letter notes.

The shelter is accepting donations through GoFundMe. Other ways to donate can be found on the SPCA’s website at https://www.rsmspca.org/
