Cat shelter is full
The Carbon County Friends of Animals has a full house.
With more than 150 cats and kittens, manager Michelle Kreitz said the Jim Thorpe shelter cannot accept any more at this point.
“We are over capacity,” she said.
The overabundance of felines, she said, wasn’t expected since it’s not a typical breeding season.
“It’s just a lot of people coming with stray cats, or people surrendering their cats,” Kreitz said.
But what’s mostly to blame, she said, is that folks aren’t getting their cats spayed or neutered.
She stressed the importance of having the procedure done.
“If you see a stray cat, you might want to get together with your neighbors to pitch in and get it spayed or neutered,” she said.
To control the overpopulation of cats, the shelter can refer people to low-cost clinics.
Kreitz also reminded people that the shelter has many cats that are looking for loving homes.
And if they can’t adopt, shelter officials ask folks to consider homing a stray in a spare room, bathroom or dog crate until space frees at the shelter.
The abundance of cats coming at a time when the shelter’s finances are strained.
In a Facebook post, the shelter reported, “With the rising cost of everything, we are feeling the impact deeply, and we urgently need your understanding and support.”

“Please consider being a monthly supporter. Your gift of $5, $10 or $20 per month will not change the world, but it will change the world for these cats forever,” according to a Facebook post.
