Weatherly sells lot, rejects 120-acre bid

Weatherly Borough Council on Monday sold a downtown parking lot, but rejected the lone bid on a 120-acre parcel in Lausanne Township.

The borough received three bids, which ranged from $10,500 to $26,789, for a parcel at Wilbur and First streets across from the train station and former borough building.

Some council members asked about the zoning on the tract, which is commercial, and what a potential buyer would do with the tract.

“That would be up to the new property owner,” Councilman Norman Richie said. “The borough wouldn’t have anything to do with it.”

Mayor Paul Hadzick pointed out that the borough wouldn’t have to maintain and shovel the sidewalks anymore, either.

“If we award to the highest bid, we can’t tell them what to do with it,” he said.

Borough Manager Harold Pudliner said that any plans for development on the tract would have to go before the zoning hearing board.

“Based on the size of the lot, I think the high bid is a pretty good price,” Richie said.

Hadzick agreed, saying the borough wouldn’t have to pay insurance or perform maintenance, and the property would be back on the tax roll, bringing revenue to the Weatherly Area School District, the council and the borough.

Council approved the sale to the high bidder, Gerard Grega, for $26,789. Councilman Vincent Cuddeford II was the lone no vote.

Council also acted on a lone bid of $40,000 from Tom Morelli on the 120-acre former watershed property after a brief discussion.

Councilman Jeffery Miller didn’t think the borough should sell an asset such as the tract until it has to do so.

“That’s like money sitting there. It doesn’t cost us anything,” he said.

Hadzick said the borough does insure the property, and the school district and Lausanne Township loses out on property taxes under the borough’s ownership.

“If we got the right bid on that, and we could invest the money, we’d have a guaranteed income, and right now we have no income coming from that property,” Hadzick said. “That’s just my thoughts.”

Richie agreed. Council then rejected the bid and moved to rebid the property. Miller voted against the move.
