A Philadelphia woman faces child endangerment charges after an incident in late June in Nesquehoning.
Briana Berkowitz, 29, was charged with endangering the welfare of children-parent commits offense; simple assault and harassment.
District Judge Beth Dodson arraigned Berkowitz Monday afternoon and set bail at $10,000 unsecured.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 7.
According to court papers, police responded to a home on East Diaz Avenue for a domestic dispute the morning of June 30.
The father of a 3-year-old reported that Berkowitz struck the boy in the mouth with her cane, causing his mouth to bleed, court papers said.
The man had a wad of paper towels in his hand with fresh blood, and said it was from his son’s mouth. The man told police that he saw Berkowitz strike his son and confronted her, and an argument ensued.
Berkowitz admitted to striking the boy by accident, and later said that she did not know the boy was injured, court papers said. Children and Youth were notified and the boy examined at the hospital, showing an injury of the head, swollen gums and a contusion of the mouth, court papers said.
A visual bruise developed on the boy’s cheek while police were on the scene, court papers said.
