Lansford official pleads guilty

Doyle to be sentenced Oct. 29 in assault case

A Lansford borough councilman has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for an incident that sent a man to a hospital with traumatic injuries.

Jay Doyle, of West Water Street, appeared before Carbon County President Judge Honorable Roger N. Nanovic to enter his plea on a single count of aggravated assault — attempts to cause serious bodily injury with extreme indifference, Tuesday afternoon.

Doyle’s sentencing has been deferred until Oct. 29 for a presentence investigation.

In October, Doyle waived criminal charges stemming from an assault that sent a man to a hospital with traumatic injuries to Carbon County Court of Common Pleas,

Doyle was originally charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment following the Aug. 16 incident, and police later added charges of aggravated assault — attempt to cause or cause bodily injury with a deadly weapon; terroristic threats, two additional counts of simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Borough police obtained additional video footage showing the assault. The recording shows Doyle approach the man, a verbal dispute occur and Doyle is seen striking the victim in the head with a single punch, court papers said.

The victim fell to the ground, and Doyle continued to strike the man in the head by punching and kicking him, court papers said.

Doyle is seen walking away, and then approaches the man a second time, pulling a folding knife from his pocket and placing it to the forehead of the man, court papers said.

In addition to video, witnesses identified Doyle, saying he struck the man in the head with fists and then kicked the victim in the head while on the ground, court papers said. Witnesses also told police that Doyle had removed a folding pocket knife and placed it to the throat of the man, court papers said.

The man suffered traumatic injuries, which resulted in internal bleeding, court papers said.

Doyle told police the man started the incident by pushing him, and calling his daughter a derogatory name, court papers said.

Doyle, who was a councilman last year when the incident occurred and has served a council vice president since January, was initially jailed following the incident and has been free on $50,000 bail since Aug. 23.
