Letter to the editor: Tire burning - a viable option

Again, we strive to go backwards instead of moving forward into the future. Many years ago a cogeneration plant rose among the silt banks of the Nesquehoning valley.

To much chagrin of the local residents, especially some members of the Lake Hauto Club, a petition was passed to stop this growth citing pollution, noise, and decreasing property values, among others. Here we are more than 25 years later and the area continues to thrive in spite of some business closures along with property values increasing exponentially.

We want to own several vehicles, along with 4-wheelers, golf carts, and ATVs, etc. but not give thought about where to responsibly dispose of those “nasty” little round things they travel on.

The vehicles traveling on the roadways providing commerce contribute by paying taxes and fees. I don’t know if 4-wheelers, fireworks, or loud bands provide any substantive value to the area. I travel near the Panther Creek facility, within a few hundred feet, several times a week and notice no intrusive comportment emanating from or arriving into the area. Instead of elaborating on the significant value that tire burning, whether shredded or whole, contributes to the environment I would ask that people go to the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s website, particularly https://archive.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/materials/tires/web/html/basic.html to make an informed decision instead of relying on our local misinformation machine.

Respectfully,

Steve Kurtz
