Walter H. Niedermeyer, a Slatington Councilman and longtime mayor, died Friday of injuries suffered in a crash.

The Lehigh County Coroner’s office said Niedermeyer, 81, died at 6:08 p.m. at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethelehem.

The coroner’s office said Niedermeyer was the driver of a car that hit a parked car at 6:57 a.m. in the 200 block of Delaware Avenue, Palmerton.

The coroner’s office and the Palmerton Police Department are investigating.

Niedermeyer began serving as mayor in 2001 with several consecutive terms. He left office in 2021. Earlier this year, he was sworn in as a council member.
