Memorial Day services

• Carbon County: Service at 9 a.m. Friday in Josiah White Park. Speaker is CW3 retired Eric Flowers, band director at Jim Thorpe.

• Coaldale: Service at 1 p.m. Sunday at the park by the town hall, followed by a short service on Bull Run Street in the Seek section and refreshments at the Legion.

• Gilbert: American Legion, Post 927, Gilbert, is hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday. It is an open to the community event.

• East Penn Township: Saturday at 1 p.m., unveiling of new veterans memorial monument in honor of local servicemen and servicewomen at the Ashfield Playground, 390 Blue Mountain Road, Ashfield.

• Eldred Township: The Veteran’s Commission will be holding a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the township building at the Veteran’s Memorial, 490 Kunkletown Road, Kunkletown (next to the Post Office).

• Hometown: The 156th anniversary of Memorial Day will be observed at the Sky-View Memorial Park at 11:30 a.m. Monday with a ceremony to be conducted by the Isganitis-Heckman-Messerschmidt American Legion Post 973, Quakake, which is observing its 77th year. Main address by retired Col. Ronald Blickley, U.S.A.F.

• Jim Thorpe: Saturday, American Legion Post 304, Jim Thorpe, will conduct services as follows: 9 a.m., World War I monument, Jim Thorpe Memorial Park and Lost at Sea; 9:15 a.m., World War II Monument, North Street; 9:45 a.m., Soldiers & Sailors Monument, Hazard Square; 10 a.m., Vietnam War Monument, West Broadway; 10:30 a.m., Korean War Monument, Diligent Fire Co.; and 10:45 a.m., Civil War Monument, Liberties Hill Road. At all services, there will be the laying of the wreath, prayer and Taps; Monday: 9 a.m., Mauch Chunk Cemetery; 9:30 a.m., Immaculate Conception Cemetery; 9:45 a.m., Evergreen Cemetery; 10 a.m., St. Joseph’s Cemetery; 10:45 a.m., Christman’s Cemetery Church, off Route. 903, 11 a.m., Henning’s Cemetery, Albrightsville; and 11:30 a.m., St. Paul’s Cemetery, Old Stage Road. At all sites, there will be a program, prayer, rifle salute and taps.

• Lansford: 9 a.m. Monday, JFK Park, keynote speaker, Sgt. Jack Kranchick, 173d Airborne, U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran, native of Lansford. He served our country as a paratrooper in the Vietnam War and was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal w/Valor, Purple Heart, Air Medal. He has been mentioned in two books about the Vietnam War. Kranchick continued his life of service on the home front and retired from the Governor’s Detail, Pennsylvania State Police.

• Lehighton: Sunday, West Group: 9 a.m., St. John’s Church Cemetery, Mahoning Drive West; 9:45 a.m., military honors at Zimmerman’s Cemetery/Mahoning Veterans’ Memorial/Peter Nothstein grave site at Normal Square; 10:30 a.m., Ben Salem Church Cemetery; 11:15 a.m., Dinkey Memorial Church Cemetery; 11:30 a.m.: West Bowmans Veterans Monument; 12:15 p.m.: Packerton Cemetery, Mahoning Township.

• Lehighton, East Group: Sunday, 9 a.m., Parryville Cemetery; 9:15 a.m., Bunker Hill & Jewish Cemetery, East Weissport; 9:30 a.m., Long Run Cemetery, Franklin Township; 10:30 a.m., St. Paul’s Church Cemetery (Big Creek), Franklin Township, student speaker will be Konner Nalesnik, 11:15 a.m.: Franklin Heights Memorial Park Cemetery; St. Matthew’s Church Cemetery, North Weissport,

• Lehighton, Monday: Group B: 9 a.m., Weissport Park; 9:15 a.m.: Union Hill Cemetery; 10 a.m.: Wreath toss from Ralph Strubinger Memorial Bridge. Group A: 8:45 a.m.: Town memorials starting at Lehighton Veterans Memorial Park. Group A & B: 10:30 a.m.: Main service at Lehighton Upper Park Amphitheater; 11:30 a.m. procession to Lehighton Cemetery. Military honors with flag raising; 12:15 p.m.: Military honors at American Legion Post #314, followed by flag raising and conclusion of services/honors.

• Nesquehoning: V.F.W. Post 8008 will hold Memorial Day services on Sunday and Monday as follows: Sunday, the veterans will conduct services at the outlying cemeteries of the borough and are asked to meet at the post at noon; and Monday, the traditional parade in the community will begin at 8:30 a.m., with a ceremony to be held after the parade at the post home. Guest speaker is retired Sgt. Greg Wirth. Participants are asked to meet in the St. Luke’s lot before the start of the parade.

• Palmerton: Parade will start at 10 a.m. and form in front of the area of Spillane’s Fit, where it will march down Delaware Avenue. There will be stops along the route to place a wreath at the Veterans Memorial, the Revolutionary Soldier at the police station, and at the monument at borough hall. Parade will proceed to Fifth Street, to Franklin Avenue to Palmerton Borough Park, where services will be held at 11 a.m. In case of rain, services will be held in the St. John Neumann Regional School gym. Carbon County District Attorney Michael S. Greek will be the featured speaker.

• Polk Township: The Polk Township Veterans’ Memorial Day event, in remembrance of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, will take place on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m., at the Veterans’ Memorial and Adam’s Faith Garden, Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Trach Road, Kresgeville. If rain, then the event will be held in the church.

• Slatington: Sunday, Grave site visits, 8:10 a.m., Williamstown Cemetery; 8:40 a.m., Jacksonville Cemetery; 9:15 a.m., New Tripoli at the Memorial Park; 9:45 a.m., Heidelberg UCC; 10:15 a.m., Neff’s Cemetery; 10:45 a.m., Seventh Street Catholic Church; 11 a.m.: Union Cemetery Allen O. Delke’s Grave; 11:15 a.m., Friedens Cemetery, Friedens; 11:45 a.m., Presbyterian Cemetery, and 12:05 p.m., Veterans Memorial, Slatington. Monday, 8:05 a.m., Catholic Church Cemetery, Washington Street, Slatington; 8:30 a.m., Slatedale Cemetery; 8:50 a.m., Trout Creek Covered Bridge at 5 N. Seventh St. to throw flower petals in the creek for those in the U.S. Navy who were lost at sea; 10:30 a.m., service at Fairview Cemetery.

• Summit Hill: Legionnaire Clem Midas to be the Grand Marshal of the 2024 parade, Carbon County’s largest tribute to America on Memorial Day. Midas, a resident of Summit Hill, will lead the three-division parade that will step off at 11 a.m. Monday, after the traditional memorial service that will begin at 10 a.m. in the center of Ludlow Park.

• Tamaqua: The 2024 Tamaqua Memorial Day Parade will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Monday on Broad Street in Tamaqua. Jack Kulp will be the Grand Marshal of the parade, and Staff Sgt. Matthew Holmberg will be the featured speaker for the 156th Tamaqua Memorial Day of Service Remembrance service. Service, 11 a.m. from the Soldiers’ Circle in Odd Fellow’s Cemetery with the color guard of the Tamaqua American Legion C.H. Berry Post #173 rendering honors. In the event of rain, the service will be held at the Tamaqua Arts Center, 125 Pine St.

• Walnutport: R.W. Fritzinger Post 7215, Walnutport, decorating the monument at 2 p.m. Saturday.

• Weatherly: The American Legion Family Memorial Day service will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at the War Monument on Spring Street, across from the old high school. Parade participants will gather at 8:30 at Tweedle Park for the start of the traditional line of march at 9 a.m. The parade will proceed to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for a brief ceremony and continue to Union Cemetery. Speaker: Mark Baylis, founder and CEO of Valor Clinic Foundation. Student speakers will be Mellaine Marshman and Jack James.
