Summer reading

The Western Pocono Community Library, Brodheadsville, has announced its 2024 Summer reading program. It will run from June 17 through Aug. 2.

The weekly schedule includes: Monday, Summer Toddler Rhythm for ages 1 to 3 at 10:30 a.m.; Tuesday, Reading Rangers for ages 4 to 7 at 10:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Trail Blazers for ages 8 to 12 at 10:30 a.m.; Thursday, Special Events for all ages at 6 p.m.; and Friday, Campfire Cubs for ages 0 to 3 at 10:30 a.m. Register online at westernpoconocommunitylibrary.org.

WE Republicans Club

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the West End Republican Club will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday of next week at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.

Those planning to eat dinner or just socialize are asked to come at 6 p.m.

Fireman’s festival

Coming on May 30, 31 and June 1 is the West End Firemen’s Festival at the West End Fairgrounds. It offers a large Tricky Tray event, rides, entertainment, food and also fireworks on June 1.

All proceeds will benefit the four fire companies that serve the West End: Polk Township, West End, Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder, and Kunkletown.

It is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Market reminder

From the Monroe County PA Area on Aging comes word that the Farmer Market Coupon program, enabling millions of PA low-income eligible seniors (aged 60+) to enjoy a full range of fresh seasonal veggies from local PA Farmers during, will continue from June 1 through Nov. 30

Each senior is given five $10 checks, a couple gets a total of $100.

In addition, 16 local farmer markets throughout Monroe County participated in the coupons’ redemption.

PVEN lunch begins

A drive-through summer lunch program offered by the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network will begin anew on June 6.

It will run every Thursday from 8 to 11 a.m. through Aug. 15 at the PVEN Food Pantry & Clothing Closet, 2334 Route 209, Sciota.

Each eligible child will receive five days worth of shelf-stable lunches to take home under the age of 18.

There are no residency or income requirements. “Just get in line and let PVEN staff know how many children you have,” are the instructions.

The adult in the group will be asked to sign for the meals once received.

Upcoming VBS

• Middlecreek Christian Church is holding Vacation Bible School for children ages 4 to12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 10 to 14.

Each day’s Bible lesson teaches an event in the life of Jesus that shows how much He loves us and cares about us.

There will be crafts, snacks, games, music, and more and Family Night. on June 14

The church’s Monthly Movie Night is every second Sunday at 5 p.m. On June 9, the movie will be “Fire Proof” by Kendrick Brothers Productions.

• St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, has announced that its VBS, Camp Firelight, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, July 15 to 19, in the grove. The theme is Camp Firelight.

Students ages 3 to 12, youth helpers ages 13 to 17, and adult leaders are being asked to be part of the team.

The sessions will include Bible storytelling, crafts, science experiments, snacks, games, music, fellowship, and making new friends.

• Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will host its Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon, July 22 to 26.

There is no registration fee this year for this week of faith and fun.

Registration forms are available on the church’s website/at the church office/at the bulletin stations.

Adult volunteers are always needed for props and activities. Clearances may be required.

• Effort UMC will hold its VBS the week of July 29 through Aug. 2. The theme for the week is: Hometown Nazareth - Where Jesus was a Kid. This program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Those who are willing to volunteer at VBS, contact Deb Audett at: daudett@ptd.net and she will assist folks in signing up and ensuring clearances are up-to-date.

A sign-up sheet to register the youth will be placed on the Welcome Center in the near future.
