Walters, Fenstermaker get CL gold

WHITEHALL - Palmerton’s Nataly Walters had a streak to continue.

And Northwestern’s Sadie Fenstermaker had a title to defend.

Mission accomplished.

Nothing could stop the duo from duplicating their success on the second day of the Colonial League Track and Field Championships Wednesday.

Walters captured the league title in the triple jump for the third year in a row, one day after securing gold in the long jump.

Fenstermaker carried on her success in the shot put, winning the event for the second consecutive year to continue what has been a stellar season for the senior.

Walters also medaled in the 100 Wednesday, and was a member of the Bombers’ 400 relay team that placed second to highlight two days of competition that included four medals for the junior.

Taking flight

Walters has been a force in all of her events, especially the jumps, where she won state titles in the long and triple jump last season.

Her success in the triple jump included a league record leap of 39-8 last season. She was seeded first in the event this year at 38-10.

Working her way back from an ankle injury, Walters appears to be hitting her stride at the right time, winning the event Wednesday with a jump of 39-7.5.

“Coming into today, I haven’t gotten a big, 39 (foot) jump since last year,” said Walters. “I wasn’t getting discouraged, but I kind of needed that boost of confidence going into districts and states, where I want to defense my titles there. It’s going to be tough competition, so to get this bigger jump today is a confidence boost, and it was only a half inch off my PR, which is the league record, school record and my own personal best.

“To get close to that, and to almost even tie it, it was really a good step in the right direction, and I hope next week at districts I can possibly get 40 feet. That’s been kind of my goal all year. To get a step closer each time I jump is just a great feeling.”

She didn’t waste time making her presence felt Wednesday.

“My first jump was 39-0, and then my second jump was 39-7.5,” Walters said. “I was feeling good, I was ready to go again. My third jump, I noticed I went a little high on my first phase. And as someone who has had previous injuries, I just told myself I I’m going to slow down and I don’t have to finish this jump and that I already had a good mark. I finished the jump, but it was around 36 feet. I could have pushed it, but I didn’t want to land wrong or possibly injure myself. I really wanted 40 feet, so I tried it and didn’t get it and wound up passing my last jump, and that was the best decision. Save it for districts next week.”

Walters started her day with a third place finish in the 100, running a 12.66. Walters, along with Claire Thomas, Sarah Sabo and Erin Gombert placed second in the 400 relay with a time of 50.29.

Back-to-back

The top seed in the shot put, Fenstermaker won the event with a mark of 37-0.5. The victory also came on the heels of a runner-up finish on Tuesday in the discus.

“I’m really excited,” said Fenstermaker. “I was hoping it would be this way. I was excited yesterday for today.”

The senior had no shortage of motivation heading into the event.

“I don’t know (if yesterday) eased any nerves because I was disappointed with how I did,” said Fenstermaker. “But it made me want to come back stronger today. And my mark was fine. I was really close to my PR (37-9). I was hoping to at least throw 36 (feet). I was struggling a little bit; I was throwing 35s. But I just told myself to relax, and I had a good throw and it was a good day.”

Fenstermaker won the shot put last year with a mark of 36-0. She was fifth in the event as a sophomore and 12th as a freshman, showcasing the strides she has continued to make.

“Definitely my technique that I work on every day,” said Fenstermaker, who also qualified for states in the shot put last season. “One thing at a time, like I was saying yesterday, and also my speed. I’m able to be fast through the circle, so when I do my glide, I’m very quick, which helps me bring my energy with the shot put and also reaching over the toe board with my arm, that helps me get a little extra.

“I try to work on one or two things every day, in the end it all comes together I guess. (Mike) Kistler (throwing coach) definitely helps me a lot. I love him as a coach and I wouldn’t be where I was without him.”

Runner-up finishes

Four area athletes placed second in the Colonial League meet.

Northern Lehigh’s Evelina Mayak (100 hurdles) and Katelynn Barthold (800), Northwestern’s Grace Yost (pole vault) and Palmerton’s Jessica Heydt (shot put) all earned silver medals Wednesday.

Mayak ran a solid 15.42, better than her seed time of 15.60 and the 15.49 she ran in prelims Tuesday, finishing just behind Savina Steele (NDGP), who won in 15.40.

“I’m happy with my time,” said Mayak, who also placed third in the triple jump (35-2). “It’s definitely an improvement from my first race. I just want to keep trying to improve each race and I did that.”

Barthold ran a 2:21.46 to place second in the 800. She was seeded second at 2:19.97.

“I’m happy. I definitely think I could have pushed a little harder if I pushed sooner,” said Barthold. “But I’m still overall very happy being able to place after not doing it last year and not placing.”

Mayak, Barthold, Natalie Moffitt and Mikayla Gordon also placed third in the 1600 relay with a time of 4:13.78.

Yost cleared 9-3 for a second-place finish in the pole vault. She was the top seed at 10-7.

“I wanted to try to break my own school record,” said Yost. “But it was kind of an off day. Things weren’t really coming together as planned. But I’m OK with it. I still got second, and I was still able place.

“I’m very happy with the whole season. It’s been really good.”

Heydt finished with a mark of 33-6.5 to place second behind Fenstermaker in the shot put. She was seeded third at 34-1.

Bears roar

The success Wednesday’s wasn’t limited to the Colonial League meet.

Pleasant Valley’s Kara Miller, Nemani Moon and Jareal Moore all earned medals in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet.

Miller tossed a 94-7 to place second in the discus. She was the top seed in the event with a mark of 104-1.

Moon ran a 59.44 to place third in the 400. She was seeded second with a time of 59.24.

“I wasn’t feeling the best, so I wasn’t expecting a lot,” said the senior, who will continue her track and field career at Seton Hill University, where she will also study nursing. “But I feel like I did the best I could. I feel like I’m in a good spot this year. Last season, I ended right around 1:00. I definitely feel like I’m in a better place this year. If I can run anything under my PR that would be great. That’s my goal.”

Moore ran a 22.52 to place fourth in the 200. He clocked a 22.48 Tuesday in the prelims and was seeded with a 22.46.

The junior also qualified for the finals in the 100, running an 11.12 to place fifth after running an 11.14 in Tuesday’s prelims.

“These two days were pretty good,” said Moore. “They helped me learn about what I need to do in the future for districts. I know I can’t slack, and I just have to keep working hard.”
