William J. Lecher, 56, of Pottsville, died in a one-vehicle crash at 2:34 p.m. May 7 on Route 183 in Bethel Township.

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks said he was pronounced dead at the Geisinger-St. Luke’s Hospital, Orwigsburg, after being transported there by personnel from the Pottsville/Schuylkill Haven Area EMS corps.

Police said he was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado northbound at an unknown rate of speed when the vehicle crossed the center median and entered the southbound lanes, exited the shoulder of the road and struck PennDOT road signs. Following the contact, the vehicle struck a grassy embankment on the west side of the road.

Police said upon their arrival they discovered Lecher to be unresponsive and locked inside the vehicle. Police removed the victim to perform life-saving measures that they and ambulance personnel continued before making the transport.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.
