Tamaqua police charge NY man for trespassing

A New York man with a history of trespassing in Tamaqua has been charged again, borough police said.

Police said that on May 5, Jermaine Thomas Sr. entered a home on the 500 block of East Broad Street. A resident told police that Thomas used a back door and walked into the living room. The man told Thomas to leave, and while outside the home, Thomas said he was looking for his nephew.

Police said they studied video surveillance and learned that the man was Thomas. On May 6, police saw Thomas on Cedar Street and spoke to him about the incident.

According to police, Thomas said he was intoxicated the night before and walked to Tamaqua from Lansford. He said he heard voices telling him that his nephew was in the West Broad Street home.

Police said Thomas had an outstanding arrest warrant from the department. He was taken into custody and searched. Officers said they found a smoking pipe with suspected methamphetamine in his pocket.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer on charges of criminal trespass and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sent to prison in lieu of $10,000 percentage bail.

The other charges of criminal trespass and defiant trespass stem from an Aug. 14 incident after Thomas entered a home on the 300-block of Arlington Street.

According to police, officers were told that Thomas had lived in the home at one time but had been ejected by the Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office in May 2023.

Police confirmed the ejection and spoke to Thomas at the police station a day later. He told police that he climbed through a basement window and unlocked the door for his mother to enter.
