Carbon Senior Games host opening ceremony

The 2024 Carbon County Senior Games got underway Tuesday with about 220 participants.

Seniors ages 60 and older from throughout Carbon County assembled at the Lehighton Recreation Center to put their abilities to the forefront in their quest to cop a medal.

The games run through May 15, with a closing ceremony banquet on May 17.

Anne Horrigan, director of the games, welcomed the participants to this year’s games.

Horrigan thanked her staff, along with the Panther Valley JROTC color guard and student volunteers for their time.

She also said she was glad to see all the familiar people who returned, and is glad to see the new people.

“It’s wonderful to see everyone here,” Horrigan said. “We hope you have a wonderful experience.”

Sue Zeigler, director of the Area Agency on Aging, noted that May is Older Americans month.

Zeigler also acknowledged the competitors for their participation in the games.

Commissioners Michael Sofranko (chairman), Wayne Nothstein and Rocky Ahner all spoke about the significance of the games.

The competitors then recited the Senior Games Oath before officially beginning another year of competition.

Competitors were pumped to mingle with their friends, while newcomers bore witness to what the games represent.

Dorothy Quigley, who represented Panther Valley on the North Carbon County Team, said she’s a regular at the games and enjoys them every much.

“Just everything; I especially enjoy the first day, and when we’re out on Field Day,” Quigley said. “Just meeting everybody; it’s just an enjoyable day.”

Likewise, Rich Leeman, who represented Jim Thorpe on the North Carbon County Team, said he’s taken part in the games for over the past five years and also looks forward to them because of the people he gets to see and the friends he makes.

“I like Field Day, because you’re outside, and it has some of the events I routinely do well in, such as the walk and softball throw,” Leeman said. “It’s an excellent opportunity for seniors to get out and exercise, stretch your legs, and get some sunshine.”
