Man accused of sexual assault of girl, 15

A 63-year-old Lansford man faces corruption of minors and indecent assault charges after an incident with a 15-year-old girl in the borough last year.

District Judge Beth Dodson arraigned Martin Klett of East Abbott Street on the charges, one of which is a felony, on Wednesday. He is free on $100,000 unsecured bail.

According to arrest papers, Lansford police received a call June 29 from the Slatington police chief regarding a sexual assault that occurred with a child in Lansford the night before.

The child victim recounted what happened to the Slatington chief during a sexual assault exam at St. Luke’s Carbon and during a scheduled Child Advocacy Center interview in November.

The victim had been visiting in Lansford, when she said her back hurt and Klett offered to give her a back massage, court papers said. They went upstairs to a second-floor bedroom along with another person.

Klett told the other person to go back downstairs and to keep an eye on dinner, which was cooking, court papers said.

The victim said she laid face down on the bed, and Klett touched her inappropriately.

At that point, the victim said she was scared enough to run away from Klett and went downstairs and then outside with another person for a walk. They walked to a friend’s home in Coaldale, and she told the other person what happened and called her mother to pick her up, court papers said.

The victim’s mother provided a written statement regarding her conversations when she went back to the home to confront residents, including Klett, who first said he did nothing wrong and then said the victim told him to touch her.
