Palmerton tables bids for traffic signal, trash cans on Delaware

Palmerton will hold off on the awarding of a bid for the traffic signal at Third and Delaware Avenue.

Borough council on Thursday unanimously agreed to table the matter, which includes improvements to the light pole at the intersection.

The decision to table the matter is due to awaiting clarification on a few items.

Borough Manager Autumn Canfield previously said the borough obtained an Automated Red Light Enforcement grant, and was working on permitting through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

In December 2021, the borough received nearly $330,000 in state funds for traffic safety improvements through PennDOT, which distributed about $12.9 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement funding to 22 municipalities statewide to fund 28 safety projects.

Palmerton received $329,398 for replacement of all existing signal equipment at the offset intersection of Third Street and Delaware Avenue to bring the intersection up to current PennDOT safety standards.

Trash containers

Also on Thursday, council tabled discussion on Palmerton Chamber of Commerce trash containers.

The borough’s streets and sidewalks committee will be afforded a chance to review the matter.

In August, Joe Federanich, co-chair of the Palmerton Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber had received a $1,000 grant from the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Federanich said the Palmerton Chamber matched the $1,000, and Spillane’s Fit matched what both of the chambers donated.

He said that gives the chamber $4,000, which it may buy new blue and white trash cans to line Delaware Avenue.

Federanich said they would start at the upper end of Delaware Avenue, and buy as many trash cans as they can, put them out and continue again this year.
