Summit Hill man charged in assault case

A Summit Hill man faces multiple charges after keeping a woman in his home against her will, resisting arrest and assaulting officers.

Andrew Lovett, 29, of East McMurtrie Street, was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, theft by unlawful taking, simple assault, resisting arrest, false imprisonment and criminal mischief.

He was committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $150,000 bail.

According to court papers, Summit Hill police received a call from a man on Sunday about a woman with a broken leg being held against her will at a residence.

The man told police that he was invited to the East McMurtrie Street residence by a woman he met on Tinder. When he arrived, there was another woman lying on a bed with a broken leg and she wrote “danger” on her hand with marker, court papers said.

Officers went to the home to perform a welfare check and were met by Lovett, who would not allow them to speak to the woman and told them to come back with a warrant.

Police got a message from the Carbon County Communications Center to call the woman with the broken leg. The officer called, spoke to her by phone, realized there was an issue and that she was scared to speak, court papers said.

Officers returned to the residence and made contact with Lovett, informing him that they were going to do a protective sweep of the home. The first woman brought the woman with the broken leg to the door.

The officer used his cellphone to text, “Are you in danger and need to get out? We will call you an ambulance?” The woman responded by blinking her eyes very fast at the officer, court papers said.

The officer then leaned in and asked the woman if she was safe to confirm, and she again blinked her eyes very quickly that she was in trouble, court papers said.

The officer requested EMS come to the scene, and she was transported to the borough police department.

The woman told officers that she broke her leg on April 15 at SkyZone, and that Lovett brought her to his residence upon discharge from the hospital on April 17. He would not allow her to leave and told her that he would make her life “worse,” if she did, court papers said.

She told officers that she was forced into sexual encounters while in the residence, court papers said. The previous evening, Lovett and the other woman invited the other man over using Tinder.

After the man left, Lovett became angry that she did not want to participate in sexual actions and slapped her twice in the face with the back of his hand. He also kicked her broken leg and pushed her to the floor, court papers said.

The woman said that Lovett broke her cellphone, and she wasn’t able to contact anyone. He also took her pain medication, Oxycodone, prescribed for the broken leg. She told police that she took one of the 30 prescribed pills and Lovett took the rest.

She said she wasn’t allowed to leave the home, and that Lovett made threats if she tried to leave. She was forced to stay awake for days with no sleep, she told police.

Officers attempted to remove Lovett from a holding cell in the Summit Hill Police Station, and he refused to cooperate, court papers said.

A struggle with officers ensued with multiple officers using significant force to overcome Lovett’s resistance, court papers said. Lovett thrashed about, striking officers with his legs, feet, arms and hands, court papers said.

During the encounter, Lansford Police Chief Kyle Woodward and Summit Hill Police Officer Christopher Fischi suffered hand injuries as a result of Lovett’s resisting officers trying to restrain him, court papers said.

Officers from Summit Hill, Lansford, Coaldale and Nesquehoning were involved in the arrest and attempting to restrain Lovett, court papers said.

Summit Hill Police Chief Todd Woodward said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
