Tamaqua districts sells solar certificates

Tamaqua Area School Board approved the sale of more than $100,000 in solar renewable energy credits on Tuesday night.

The board authorized the sale of 3,263 SRECs at a sale price of $31, net of commission, which have a value of $101,153.

The board also approved selling the district’s remaining SRECs through February 2024 at a cost not less than $31, net of commission.

Board Vice President Nicholas Boyle last week suggested selling the remaining credits, due to the number of solar project in the county, which will lower the credit’s value.

The current sale price is $19 below expectations, and the district had been selling these credits, which are earned through the energy produced by its solar panels, at $50.

Renovations

The board also moved forward with renovations to the Student Career and Support Center, formerly the high school library, to add more offices.

“We’ll be creating some offices in a section of our library that isn’t being used right now,” Superintendent Ray Kinder told the board during its work session.

The additional space is needed to accommodate additional personnel.

The board approved an agreement with the McClure Co. at a cost of $135,000. Kinder said that McClure was a CO-STARS company.

The renovations would be part of the Morgan Foundation grant and would not affect the district’s budget, he said.

The work will be done by the end of July.
