Local Roundup: Results from April 20

The Palmerton softball and Lehighton baseball teams each secured their place in the District 11 playoffs with victories on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-Saucon Valley

Brady O’Donnell went 4-for-4 and knocked in three runs to help Lehighton gain an 8-1 non-league victory over Saucon Valley.

The win clinched a district playoff berth for the Indians, who improved to 10-3.

Cole Dietz pitched six scoreless innings for Lehighton, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out four.

Jake Lewis added three hits and two RBIs, while Aidan Rarick and Jayse Lawrence both finished with a hit and two runs. Noah Barndt also chipped in with a hit and knocked in a pair of runs.

The Indians stole 14 bases, including four by Rarick and three by O’Donnell.

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Mason Ligenza collected a pair of extra-base hits and knocked in three runs to help power Tamaqua to a 7-3 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

One of Ligenza’s hits was a two-run homer, while he also added a double.

The Blue Raiders, now 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the league, also received two hits and two runs from Cooper Ansbach.

Winning pitcher Gavan Hess allowed just one earned run in five innings of work, striking out four.

For the Olympians (2-9; 0-7), Nikolas Schwartz, Brody Schrantz and Owen Hubbard all finished with two hits and a run scored. One of Hubbard’s hits was a home run.

Northern Lehigh-Pen Argyl

Three runs in the top of the seventh inning helped Northern Lehigh edge Pen Argyl for a 9-7 Colonial League victory.

Coy Daubert’s RBI-double tied the game at 7-7 before a pair of errors helped Northern Lehigh score the go-ahead runs. Daubert had three hits and three RBIs, Jayden Christman also had three hits, Nicklaus Buskirk added two hits and two RBIs, and Brayden Buskirk had two hits for the Bulldogs, who improved to 2-7. Christman and Connor Simms each scored a pair of runs.

Cayden Vishnesky had two hits and two RBIs for Pen Argyl, which dropped to 8-6

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pleasant Valley’s rally fell short as Pocono Mountain West held on for a 7-6 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Trailing 5-2, the Bears scored three runs to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, but Pocono Mountain West broke through with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth as Pleasant Valley scored just once more in the top of the sixth.

Zach Pandolfo had two hits and two RBIs, while Anden Bordick and Sam Smale each had two hits for the Bears, who slipped to 3-8.

Will Mecca had three hits and an RBI for Pocono Mountain West, which won its first game of the season (1-7).

Panther Vy.-No. Dame-ES

Chase Weaver had a big day at the plate to help Panther Valley roll to a 20-2 non-league victory over Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg.

Weaver reached base seven times, going 4-for-4 with three walks. He scored four runs, knocked in a pair and also stole two bases.

The Panthers, who improved to 8-2, also received two hits, two runs and two RBIs from Aleck Jewells, while Ben Baneravage added a pair of hits, two runs and an RBI.

Brennan Kunkle contributed a pair of hits, a run and an RBI, with Stephen Hood and Drew Kokinda both chipping in with a hit and two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Brady Jones tossed five innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Palmerton-Bangor

Palmerton made quick work of Bangor, cruising to a 15-2 Colonial League victory at Pates Park.

Sydney Frantz went 4-for-4 with a homer and scored four times. She finished with five RBIs to help the Blue Bombers improve to 10-1 overall, 7-1 in the league, and clinch a district playoff berth.

Hailey Barry added three hits (single, double, triple), scored twice and knocked in three runs, while Madison Green contributed two hits and two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Carly Gaffney scattered five hits over five innings.

Emma Christie had two hits for Bangor (3-10; 3-7).

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Brianca Pridham had a big day at the plate to pace Pleasant Valley to a 23-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pocono Mountain West in three innings.

Pridham was 3-for-3 with three hits, three runs and RBIs for the Bears (8-3), who quickly took command when their offense exploded for 10 runs in both the first and second innings for a quick afternoon to extend their winning streak to five games.

Lydia Borger added three hits and three RBIs, Emma DePalma had three RBIs, and Rylan Knapp had two hits and three runs scored.

Kemaley Hamilton had the Panthers’ (0-9) lone hit.

Notre Dame-Green Pond turned back Northern Lehigh for an 8-7 win in Colonial League action.

Trailing 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs erupted for four runs, but they couldn’t seal the victory.

Adriana Danyluk ripped a two-run triple with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game. But Rachel Fisher got a strikeout for the Crusaders to end it. Kylee Snyder had three hits with an RBI, and Haylie Fenstermaker added two hits for the Bulldogs (7-3). Grace Bauer added two hits and RBIs apiece, and Danyluk plated a pair of runs.

Danica Gross had two hits for Notre Dame (7-4).

Gracelyn Lane fired a three-hitter with eight strikeouts over four innings to lead Schuylkill Haven to a 15-0 win over Jim Thorpe.

Katie Wank had a hit and drove in three runs for the Hurricanes (9-4), while Kate Donne added a hit and drove in two runs as the winners accumulated eight walks and five stolen bases.

Mara Levins, Isabella Sully, and Remy Gorski each had a hit for the Olympians, who tumbled to 3-9.

Tara Sieliano smacked a walk-off double to help Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg nip Panther Valley 8-7 in a non-league contest.

Sieliano’s double ended a seven-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, as the Spartans improved to 4-5. Sieliano finished the game 2-for-4.

The Panthers took a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh, and padded their advantage with three runs in the frame.

Morgan Orsulak had three hits, and Mikayla Yuricheck added two hits - a home run and a double - and two RBIs for Panther Valley. Myla Krapf chipped in with two hits for the Panthers, who slipped to 3-5 overall.

With the win, Salisbury moved to 8-3, while Jim Thorpe remained winless at 0-12.

Zane Kromer scored four goals and Ryan Aconzo tallied three to lead Pleasant Valley to a 14-5 victory over North Pocono in non-league action.

Chris Ward added four assist for the Bears (2-7).

North Pocono dipped to 3-6.
