Eldred seeks supervisor applicants

The Eldred Township supervisors officially accepted the resignation of Supervisor Blaine Silfies at their meeting Wednesday night.

Silfies resigned at their meeting on March 27. At that time, Eldred Township solicitor Michael Gaul told the supervisors they have 45 days to accept the resignation. After the resignation is accepted, they have 30 days to fill the position.

Any Eldred Township resident who would like to be appointed to the board is encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the township office, said township secretary Ann Velopolcek. A special meeting will be held on May 2 to appoint a new supervisor.

Silfies’ term runs through to Dec. 31, 2025. The person appointed to the position would hold the office until that time. In order to stay in office, he or she would have to run in the following election.

The township is also seeking a new janitor for the Eldred Township Community Center. The previous janitor has resigned. Velopolcek said the position pays $15 per hour.

The township has several projects for which it is requesting bids.

Velopolcek said the township is going to re-advertise for bids on the roof replacement project for the municipal building, which includes the post office. The previous advertisement said the square footage is 3,500. It is actually 7,450 square feet, she said. Any business interested in placing a bid on the project should contact the township office for more information.

The township is also seeking materials bids for stone and oil for road repairs, and for road paving projects. More information is available at the township office.

In other business, Velopolcek said the supervisors decided to reach out to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation about reducing the speed limit on Point Phillips Road.

“It’s a horrible road,” she said.

Recently, there was a near crash between a vehicle and a garbage truck on the road, Velopolcek said. The road was the scene of a fatal crash in 2019.

Although the road is paved on the Eldred Township side, Velopolcek said the steep road is dirt in some other areas. She also said the road is a often used as a detour route by PennDOT when it needs to reroute traffic from Route 33.

Velopolcek said she did not know what the current speed limit is on the road.
