Tamaqua vape task force makes compliance checks

The Tamaqua Police Department’s Vape Task Force is continuing to make sure nicotine and tobacco products aren’t being sold to minors.

The force, which formed earlier this year, recently held another round of compliance checks.

Through it, they recognized three stores for carding minors who attempted to purchase vapes or tobacco products, and cited four that did not.

Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs issued his report to borough council Tuesday.

The businesses that were in compliance include Citgo Gas Station on Center Street, Vegas Convenience on East Broad Street and Our Family Market on West Broad Street. The stores received letters of appreciation from the police department.

Both the businesses and clerks that did not pass the compliance checks were cited for sales of tobacco to minors. They include Tobacco Outlet, Mauch Chunk Street, and employee Aamir Rehman of Reading; DD Enterprise, West Broad Street, and employee Charjit Singh of Tamaqua; Pereira 4 Gas, Center Street, and employee Patel Niles of Tamaqua; and Penn Jersey Market, East Broad Street, and employee Husanpreet Singh of Tamaqua.

Hobbs said the department is working with the stores that failed the compliance checks to educate employees on the proper procedures.

The force was started because vaping is becoming “more and more” of a problem among youths, Hobbs said.

The department worked with the Pennsylvania State Police, Department of Health, Food and Drug Administration and Health Promotion Council to establish the force.
